INTERNATIONAL COURSE ON AVIAN MOVEMENTS AND MIGRATION TECHNOLOGY
July 29-August 1, 2008
Hatfield Marine Science Center, Oregon State University, Newport, OR

The National Science Foundation Education Node MIGRATE (Migration Interest Group: Research Applied Towards Education; www.migrate.ou.edu) is offering a four-day course on bird movement and migration techniques and study design aimed at graduate students who are at the preliminary stages of proposal development.  The course will take place just prior to the joint meeting of the American Ornithologists’ Union, Cooper Ornithological Society, and Society of Canadian Ornithologists in Portland, OR (http://www.pdxbirds08.org/).  Students (n = 18-20) will gain knowledge in traditional and cutting-edge techniques for studying bird movement including radio and satellite telemetry, stable isotopes, molecular markers, population modeling, molt and morphology, and radar technology.

Lectures, field techniques, computer exercises, and lab demonstrations will be presented by international experts (n= 10-15) in various fields. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to address issues of concern for their own research via one on one discussions and in small groups facilitated by experienced instructors.

Preference will be given to graduate students from Latin American, Caribbean, and the Pacific islands who have demonstrated interest in bird movement and migration.

Details

Do you have a visa?

In 200 words or less describe your research interests and how they are related to bird migration and movement.

State one or two of your preliminary research questions.

What research tools are you most interested in from this course and why? How do they relate to your research (100 words or less)?

  • Please attach a 2 page CV as a word or pdf file with file name as “Last Name CV” (e.g., Sutton cv.pdf).  Also, please have your major professor send a short email (2-3 sentences maximum) to Ryan Norris rnorris@uoguelph.ca confirming your status as a graduate student and the content of your application.

In October of 2007, MIGRATE sent three Ph.D. students to the University of Lund's Migration Course :

  • Kristina Paxton - University of Southern Mississippi
  • Keith Larson - University of Guelph, Ontario, California, Keith's Report (.pdf)
  • Adam Fudickar - University of Oklahoma, Adam's Report (.pdf)

MIGRATE covered the costs of airfare, registration and housing during the course. These students were selected as MIGRATE representatives based on (1) a letter describing their interest in the course; (2) a brief CV; and (3) a brief note from their major professor indicating whether attending this course would fit into the students educational program. Selection was based on evidence of a history of interest in migration biology and likely impact of the course on improving current research. Each attendee was to produce a report for MIGRATE on their activities.
